THE CHALLENGE

BENEFITS

Much of our heritage is recorded in manuscripts held by archives, libraries, uni- versities, museums and other historical institutions. These documents contain priceless information and timeless insights that must be preserved and made accessible. Currently, manual reading and interpretation of the manuscripts is the only way that researchers and the public can access the content. The cost of this processes is extreme, which impedes a wider approach to the publishing of this content. Manual sorting of historical collections and the vari- ous types of writing recorded can also present significant challenges to making this content widely accessible.

• Enhanced accessibility and searchability

• Affordable

• High accuracy and comprehensive indexing

• High quality service that improves over time

• Future-proof, migration free digital preservation

USECASE

We interpreted millions of digitised manuscripts for a government agency. These manuscripts had been available and accessible as scanned images, however were rarely used as the text was only readable for the human eye, and not available for modern techniques of analysis, classification or searchability. A collection of 80,000 pages of acts from XIII and XIV centuries, in unconventional formats and densely written in Latin, with extensive abbreviations and side notes, were interpreted and indexed with our leading technology.

Our interpretation solution provided both searchability and classification techniques that highlighted interesting aspects of the documents, previously hidden or unrecognised—resulting in immense value for our client.
