THE CHALLENGE More than a century of audio and visual heritage is stored in analogue form on films and magnetic tapes. There is a risk that this heritage may become inaccessible in the future if it is not digitised and preserved due to decay of the storage medium and obsolescence of technology. Video formats were used widely, by both broadcasters and the general public, for almost 50 years. During that time, over 70 videotape formats were adopted and used, some more broadly than others. This creates a significant digitisation chal- lenge, where collections can feature multiple video formats and media including the lesser known. Today there are only a few centers of excellence that are specialized in professional digitisation of audio and video material, and many of these cannot cater for unusual formats. DIGITISATION Audio & video Piql provides optimised services for restoring, digitising and safeguarding your irreplaceable audio & video content. As a specialist provider of audio and video digitisation, Piql can offer a complete solution ensuring high quality capture of information and metadata, online access and guaranteed future accessibility. As an optional add-on, Piql can offer secure long-term preservation, guaranteeing the authenticity of the content for future generations.

USECASE

A leading provider of academic streaming media to libraries, needed to find a way to seamlessly manage and distribute their 6000 hours of video content. The videos were not only to be digitised and encoded, but converted to .flv format, ready for distribution to thousands of sites. Some videos also contained subtitles, which required OCR processing. The client requested transcription services with appropriate keywords tagging. Restoration and digitisation of the video files were completed, XML files generated, and metadata extracted for searchability. The digitised content was made available to the client through an online cataloguing service. The digitised contents could also be stored on piqlFilm for long-term secure offline storage. Online monetizing options were made available.
