Olga Tokarczuk - Nobel prize laureate stores life’s work with Piql

BACKGROUND Olga Tokarczuk, well respected and loved Polish writer and activist, is considered one of the most critically ac claimed and commercially successful authors of her gen eration. In 2018, she won the Man Booker International Prize for her novel Flights and was awarded the 2018 No bel Prize in Literature. SOLUTION Coinciding with the Nobel Peace Prize announcement for 2020, Piql celebrated the first Arctic World Archive (AWA) deposit from a Nobel Prize laureate. Olga Tokarczuk, Literature laureate from Poland, has stored her life’s work of 14 books on piqlFilm in the safe ty and security of AWA, for perpetuity. The project consisted of encoding 4,299 pages of the 14 books onto Piql’s unique preservation medium, piql Film, a digital 35mm photosensitive film. Files stored on piqlFilm can last for centuries, without electricity, with guaranteed future access. For Olga, this means, that her works will be enjoyed by generations of the distant future, representing this era of literature. This project was made possible through the efforts the Olga Tokarczuk Foundation and Literary Pub lishing.

This decision comes less than a year after the Swedish Academy announced the Nobel laureates in the field of literature. “This is, in a way, a natural step which, apart from the Nobel Prize awarded last year, ensures the survival of Olga Tokarczuk’s works. Thanks to this technology, it will remain safe,” said Anna Zaremba-Michalska, President of the Management Board of Wydawnictwo Literackie (To karczuk publishers since 2001), which financed the stor age of the AWA deposit. “Together, we made sure that our founder’s books could survive any catastrophe and be an inspiration also for fu ture inhabitants of the Earth,” added Izabella Kaluta, Vice President of the Olga Tokarczuk Foundation. Now stored along side famous artworks and music, this deposit represents the importance of literary treasures and will be safe and accessible for many years to come.
