Public archives carry an important responsibility to en sure valuable information lives on for decades and even centuries. This can be a difficult task with challenges such digital obsolescence, multiple file formats, content dupli cation, both analogue and born digital information and resource constraints. Choices must be made about which items to digitise, which information should be preserved, which technol ogy to invest in, and for how long. Collections are also often held in different legacy systems, rather than one cohesive archival management tool, creating additional work for archivists. Digitally born content is also presenting perhaps the big gest challenge of all with rapid evolution of technology resulting in technological obsolescence after just a few years. This becomes a race against time to ensure data isn’t trapped on unreadable media or in unreadable for mats.
